Herx Survival Guide: Chronic Lyme:
Please send me the ways that you have dealt with Herx. For Lyme patients the Herx are equally as bad as the disease and many physicians don't realize this. People with Lyme continually report getting calls from their physicians telling them that they can return to their normal activities and work. The Lyme patient on the other end of the phone thinks the physician is insane because they are Herxing and can't even get out of bed much less return to their normal activities.
Here is what is working for me:
Hot baths or showers 2 or three a day
ThermaCare Lower Back Heat Wraps
Blue Ice
Heating Pad
Jersey cotton clothing
Tylenol
Tramadol
Vitamin C 1 gram or more
Vitamin B12

Try a special mattress to take the pressure off your joints like a Temperpedic (or a knock off they're cheaper), Sleep Number Mattress (I like Temperpedic better myself but I've heard others say sleep number is better).
Next - buy one of those adjustable bed warmers - you can get one at most department stores to fit your size bed - It's not a "blanket" but it covers the bed just under the sheets and you can adjust the heat as you like. This will cut down on pain and the freezing/burning up sensation (because it's adjustable).
When the herx is over:
Stretch gently and within reason as often as you can - it will keep your muscles and joints working and strong without overdoing it.
Find someone you REALLY trust to handle financial matters for you - your mental status is such that you should not make any major decisions while herxing it could prove disasterous. And Rest.
PS Have your thyroid tested - Lyme can sometimes present with thyroid problems and it will make the pain much worse and your fatigue unbearable.
Lyme is like a scarecrow: Stuffing keeps coming out, but you keep putting it back in a little at a time (fix what you can, little things add up to big improvements).
